Moire / Aliasing and half-baked feature set ruin a brilliant idea
This camera is wonderful and frustrating at the same time. It's the first and only dedicated full frame interchangable lens camcorder with a NEX e mount that can accept virtually any lens (via adapters), from Sony A mount to Canon, Nikon and even Leica M lenses. I wanted to dive in and immerse myself in all the full frame glory. But I can't fully do that and I'll explain why.
First, why this camcorder COULD be an amazing game-changing tool that would blow all DSLRs out of the water: That gorgeous full-frame sensor and the e-mount which allows the use of virtually any 35mm lens ever made, including not only any SLR lens in existence but even Leica rangefinder lenses, all in a dedicated video form factor with unlimited recording time that doesn't require a ton of rigging and add-ons just to make it work. First full-frame that works with most FF & APS-C lenses !
With low cost adapters the VG900 should work with most full-frame and APS-C lenses out there. It also has settings to work in FF or 1.5x crop APS-C mode. It shoots FF 6000x4000 24mp Raw stills with shutter speeds from 30-1/8000 sec in auto or manual modes. It shoots 1080p60 ,1080p24 or 1080i60 with full manual control and uncompressed full 1080p HDMI output like the A99 and no other FF DSLR shoots 1080p60. It has the same 2359K dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder w/ eye sensor like the A99 and NEX-7 but has adjustable angle. It has a huge battery bay for using extra large Sony NP-FV100 3900mAh battery that are low cost from 3rd party vendors.
Update July 5 2013 : After using my VG900 for 8 months it sure beats using a DSLR for shooting full frame video since the adjustable angle OLED EVF is light years better than any OVF when shooting 1080p60 HD video. My 24mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4, 50mm F1.4 and 85mm F1.4 full frame primes work best with it. The Sony HVL-F60M External Flash works perfect...
