Outstanding, with some minor caveats
I have had the chance to use this camera a few times, plus compare it to some other HD cameras out there in it's price range, and came away impressed by a few aspects, and more knowing about a few others to consider.

All in all this is a great little HD camera that takes great pictures right out of the box. It handles really nice, has a true microphone that comes with it, and the lens is great on it with it's 20x ratio. It's slow-motion, though at quality a little less than SD, looks fantastic and is great fun to play with. The camera's low light capability is not as good as the Canon XH-A1 in the same price range, or the Panasonic HVX200 (another $2k+), or as good as the older Sony Z1 (which doesn't shoot 24fps). Looking back, the Sony PD170, which was the low-light standard is about 2 stops better in very low light. But the V1u's low light performance is almost one of taste. The camera tends to give a little more fine grain in such low light, kind of like film in some...

Who should buy this camcorder?
I bought my HVR-V1U and have had it a week now. I am very impressed with the quality of video with very good light. In low light the quality of this video camera is poor. But after doing hours and hours of research I decided on this model for a few reasons.

1) Size - This camcorder is about the same size as a VX-2000 with the same feel and pretty much the same layout.
2) 24p - This camcorder can shoot film in true 24p which is great if you want to give your video that "Film look"
3) XLR - This camcorder has 2 XLR inputs to put real good microphones on it if you want and comes with a $230 microphone.
4) HDMI - This model has an HDMI out so I can quickly and easily with one cord connect it to my HDTV. The Sony HDR-FX1 doesn't have this.

I think the slow motion feature is pretty cool to experiment with. But the quality is low and of course there is no sound when you do this.
Everything on the camcorder is made very well. No cheap buttons or...

Great little camera!!
Wanted to replace my VHS-C camcorder with a more updated camera. After research, I picked the HDR-XR150. Loaded with features, but small enough to fit in pockets, fanny-packs,etc. Worked great for first communion and graduation footage. Battery runtime is great, would recommend upgrade for extended uses. Works well in low light, 25x zoom is awesome!! Need to learn all of the features yet, but easy enough for beginners to use. I also need to get a blu-ray player so I can take advantage of the HD. Easy to burn dvd's with either computer or Sony DVDirect. Would highly recommend to those looking for a good family movie quality camcorder.

Great video, very compact, large memory
I'm surprised at how strong of negative reivews this camera got on Amazon. I consider myself somewhat picky about electronics and have been very happy with this camera. I rarely charge the battery and it has never come close to running out on me, the storage for video's is massive, and the video picture quality is excellent. All this in such a compact camera. I have had it almost a year and my family and friends all have been impressed with the video quality as well. I have not taken still shots with this camera so I cannot comment on still shots. I'm sure if you do your research there are probably several cameras on the market that are as good as this one, perhaps even better(cant' be by much) in this price range, but I have been very happy and very impressed with this camera and would definantly recommend this camera.
Note: Since I wrote this review I did notice that outside/bright lighting the picture is amazing. However, indoors w/moderate lighting the picture is OK, not...

Sony HDR-TD30V Full HD 3D Handycam Camcorder with 3.5-Inch LCD (Black) Best Price

The Sony Handycam HDR-TD30V utilizes two Full HD sensors to capture true 1920x1080 3D video for a more immersive 3D experience. Most 3D cameras achieve the 3D affect by splitting a 1920x1080 signal in to two 960x540 channels in order to squeeze them onto one sensor, thereby limiting resolution on the final output.

  • Double Full HD 3D camcorder
  • 3D viewing directly on 3.5" LCD, no need for 3D glasses
  • Full HD 2D playback from 3D recordings
  • 1920x1080 Full HD 24p/60p with 20.4MP Exmor R CMOS Sensor
  • 3.5" Xtra Fine LCD 3D display (1229K)

Nice 3D video, misleading advertising
I bought this camera exclusively for the 3D function, as I'm sure you will. A couple things about the product advertising. They were not deal breakers, but I prefer honesty in advertising. You are not buying this for 2D, DLP LED projection, lens options, or anything other than just 3D so don't throw away that 2D camera if that's what you wanted.

1. 1080i is the only 3D format. 1080p is not available in 3D, no frame rates, no bitrates, no codecs, nothing.
2. You can not take a picture in 3D. This was unexpected as several Sony 2D cameras can do a 3D picture.
3. Low light performance, is not HD. Instead it is adaptive to the light in that part of the picture. Brighter objects get higher resolution and frame rate. On a big screen, it appears distracting like a cheap low bitrate webcam with low res and a slow frame rate on dark areas, high fps high res on bright objects. There is no way to disable this, so either record with the built in light, which is surprisingly...

This is an excellent 3D camcorder, just okay for taking pictures.
I purchased this on Amazon initially, but it didn't arrive on time, so I ended up having to look locally and return this one to Amazon. This camera has many features, most of which I have not used. It was very simple to open the box and begin recording great video. The video is excellent in daylight. I filmed a wedding and reception. The wedding was outside on a sunny day, the reception dinner was indoors and party outside after. I filmed some parts in 3D and others in 2D. In sunlight, both turned out perfectly. The picture was vivid and clear. Inside, was standard lighting, and the picture was slightly grainy. The party that started in the evening outside as the sun went down was a total failure since there wasn't sufficient lighting. I also took pictures using the camera feature. None of them turned out great, just okay, really to be expected since this isn't a camera. The pictures I took with lower lighting were worthless. I'm marking 5 stars on this because in the proper light...

HD Video
I purchased the Sony HDR-xr350v in september to video my sons Football games. I found there is a learning curve as you would expect with any new piece of electronics. I tried differant settings but i was unable to reduce the wind noise. The pictures are nice and clear with a jpeg format. the video is outstanding in the high def format straight from the camera to the hdtv or down loaded to a computer and burned in hd. An issue with the DVD`s is that only a Blue ray player can play the hd format. you can burn it in STD format and the picture is good but not like the HD version. If you intend to edit your videos in HD look for a "avchd" editor wich can get pricy. taking stills from the video is easy and is very clear. I purchased an additional microphone and expect to try it this weekend.

Sony high definition 160gb camcoder
Just received this a few days ago and love it so far. I've had the Sony sr-11 previously but wanted more hard drive since I do lots of recording. I had my files saved on my computer from the sr-11 and was worried I wouldn't be able to get them on to this camcorder. After a few tries of trying to transfer and waiting hours to find out it didn't work, I was able to figure it out. Now I have all my files from my sr-11 on this Xr-350v. The picture quality is great although I have yet to play it back on my HDTV. I plan on getting some HDMI cords since it only came with component cords. I love the size of this, Fits perfect in my hands and not too heavy like some of the others. I suggest getting the np-100 longer lasting battery since this one only seems to last a little over an hour. The picture motion browser and video player don't work as the video is choppy and drags. I wish Sony would come up with a better quality video player. Overall, I am very happy with the XR-350V. It even has a...

Excellant camera for the price
I bought the camera a few weeks ago for to use on a trip to Disney Land. The camera was delivered the day before the trip so there was not much time to learn how to use it.I breezed through it and was on my way. If you own a GPS and or a computer you should have no problems sorting things out. I put in a Sony disk, pushed the Easy button and during the trip took two hours of pictures that are excellant. There is a format for fireworks that I used at Epcot that came out just great. Pictures that I took inside I was very happy with and are much better then the old VHS. I would advise buying a larger battery as well as the small sony battery charger. The charger that comes with the camera is so you can charge the battery through the camera is a rather long piece of wire with a box. My luggage was opened twice for inspection and I believe that was the reason. The 40x telephoto is nice but if you push it to far you will not be able to hold the camera steady enough. At least I can't. The...

Amazing at the price.
There is a brief learning curve for switching modes and such, and if you're not going to read the manual you should expect that things do not exactly turn out how you expect the first time you use it.

That being said, the optics are excellent, the digital zoom is excellent (though, as cautioned in the manual, at higher zoom levels you lose picture quality), and the camera itself is very solid. About the only complaint I have with it is that if the mini-DVD you're using is not Sony-branded, it has a little nag screen that last for a second, but disappears without any user interaction (you can probably get rid of that somehow, but I haven't bothered to find out).

You will want both a memory stick and DVDs for the camera. You will probably also want to buy a longer-lasting battery. Video at night is very possible, but if you're focusing on a distant object (such as the moon) you'll want to zoom out and back in if you've just adjusted your tripod, etc. - as the...

  • NightShot infrared system for recording in total darkness

camera should sell for (more)!
Wow. What a buy for the price. This camera has most all the options of a way more expensive camera, but it for only (this price). People complain about it not having an LCD, I do not like those, they result in shaky photography (not with this puppy though and its Image Stabilization, which is great.) and it drains the battery. So I didn't care about that. If you really want an LCD, you can move up to the next level, which is 50 dollars more. But in the process you lose the Image Stabilization, so really this camera is the better buy. It come with great features. First off, the battery lasts for a long time, you can get 90 minutes of footage which it, even with auto-focus and zooming in and out. Its great. And its easy to recharge, in fact the camera tells you how many minutes left until a full charge. Also, it tells you the minutes of camera battery you have left, instead of one of those battery meters, which can be misleading. It comes with cool features, one where it outlines the...

A super easy entry into the world of video moviemaking
After wanting a videocam for a couple of years, I finally took the plunge with this one. My choice has proven itself over and over again to have been right on target. I was shooting videos within 10 minutes of getting home with the TR818, with only brief reference to the manual (on how to open the door to put the tape in.) I am a true video novice, but everything else --insertion of battery, actual recording, activation of the cool Nightshot infrared capability, switch from record mode to playback-- was achieved intuitively. This is my first videocam, and I LOVE it. The icing on the cake is that pictures play back crisply on a 27" screen TV. Beautiful. I am sorry now I waited so long to buy a recorder, because with cameras like the TR818 out there, no one has any reason to be intimidated by the technology any longer.

Camera is Nice, Software is Useless
I bought my Sony DCR-TRV480 a week ago, to replace a 9-year-old Sony Hi8 model. My primary requirements were for a model that would make it easy to capture aging 8mm tapes on DVD media, and provide 5-10 years of use for more family videos. My first reactions are that the camera will do the job, but that the provided DVD/VCD software is useless. I have not really tested the camera functions yet, beyond generating a few minutes of digital tape to play with for quality comparisons. Thus I must limit my thoughts to the software and the camera interface to my PC. [See my update below.]

My first goal was to capture some minutes of preexisting material on my PC to learn the process and explore the software. After diligently reading the manual, I discovered that to burn DVDs with the Sony software, you must own a Sony VIAO computer. Otherwise you are stuck with direct burning of VCDs, and that without any true editing capabilities. Further, Sony's software will only capture...

Sony keeps improving it...
This is my third Sony digital 8 camcorder (yeah, I know...dropped one and the other fell into the river while filming kayaking).

I keep coming back because: 1) I love the format: digital 8 tapes that are compatible with regular 8mm tapes. You have most all advantages of digital, and I can play/review all the years of tape I recorded on standard 8mm. (For example: camera records timeline on the tape so the correct date/time will always be associated with each scene.) Additionally, while digital 8mm tape may not have all the resolution of other digital formats, its file size is much smaller when tranferred to the computer (and I find the resolution to be fine). 2) Sony has done a nice job with the concept and improved it with each subsequent model.

This model's biggest change is the 'touch screen' menu. The menu shows on the lcd screen and you touch your way through the options. It's handy and responsive -- it also leaves a lot of fingerprints on the...

  • NP-FM50 InfoLithium Rechargeable Battery

Excellent Ultra-Portable Camcorder
This is a great little camcorder. It feels sturdy, is lightweight, and I can hold it in one hand securely. The video is also quite excellent.

I was debating whether to buy this or one of the Canon ZRs. Even though I was not sure if I would be shooting a lot indoors or not, I like knowing that I can, especially with the Sony's infrared light. The reduced zoom compared to the Canons was a minor issue for me, but I thought that the improved low-light quality of the Sony compensated for it.

The touch screen only functionality of this cam took some getting used to, but as this was my first camcorder, I was not used to any other system. It does not appear that LCD-only buttons is a major drawback, and in fact, I got used to it quite quickly. Also, I can appreciate that there are fewer buttons on the body itself to add to a cluttered appearance.

The built-in lens cover is quite nice as there is no losing it, and also, I think, could be useful for quick manual transitions when...

Best Camera for size, quality and price
In my pursuit of the perfect camera, at the right price, I spent way too long pouring over online reviews, Consumer Reports articles and digital camera magazines. After a couple of weeks of labor (which included actually going out to the local stores and getting a "feel" for each camera -- a practice I highly recommend before purchase) the Sony DCR-HC20 came out on top of the rest by a full head.

Forget any of the complaints you might have read about the 7 sec delay on still shots: camcorders shouldn't be used for real photos anyway and any half-decent editing software comes with the ability to save still images straight from your footage. Also forget any complaints you might have heard about the bundled editing software: yes, it's nearly useless but again the basic software your home computer likely shipped with is all you will need to start putting together beautiful home-movies yourself (just don't forget you'll need to buy a fire-wire seperately).

The...

Going back to Amazon
This is a product with so much potential, I hate to give it a poor review. The truth is, they pushed it out the door before it was ready. It has so many compromises as to render it frustrating in actual use, in ways you probably would not notice while playing with it in a store.

Examples: Assuming you are in interlaced mode then you can take a still in the middle of recording a video. Nice (although for some reason you can't do that if set to highest-quality progressive mode; I'll give Sony the benefit of the doubt and assume there's a technical reason why not). Naturally, you can take a still photo while in "video" mode but not actually shooting video. But maddenly, if you are in still mode but just hanging out, you cannot record a video. Obviously the camera is capable, because you can make several selections and get there. It's a bug.

Another frustration: the camera constantly pops up warnings and reminders that you must clear to proceed. There is no way to...

Perfect for shooting videos of children
Pros (select feature I consider important and very handy):

- Super light and compact for carrying in pocket when going to the park, pool, etc.
- Very short lag between flipping the screen and taking videos
- Can change Exposure, White Balance and Scene on the fly even while recording
- Extremely sensitive in dark situations - I videotape my children indoors quite often and notice a significant difference between this and the
previous version of the same form-factor (from some 4 years ago)
- The slow-mo feature is fantastic and super fun when capturing children in play!!

Nitpicking:
- Yes, the battery is not the longest lasting but it's a WORTHWHILE tradeoff for smaller and lighter camera
- I wish I could anchor the Screen Brightness setting on the screen's "favorites" section, and that it had a super-bright setting too (still pretty
good under very bright sun)

Just remember, there's no perfect camera; just...

Good video camera for me
This video camera is perfect for me and my use for family and travel video recordings. I found the HD quality quite good, even in low light. I did not detect any graininess indoors and of course all outdoor videos were quite sharp and color true. I took video of some cranes walking around in the yard with the zoom and it was crystal clear, really beautiful. You could see the birds' eyes and feathers sharply. I was able to play all my videos back on my HDTV as well as on my mac computer, using iPhoto to import all photos and videos. I may not be a professional photographer, but I am quite happy with my purchase of this camera. While I can charge the camera using my laptop, I also purchased an extra battery and charger for travel.

Quality Quality Quality
I've owned video cameras, and without mentioning any of their names, I've got to give the Sony PJ230 all the stars in the sky. Where to start; The Operating Guide manual is written with full cross-reference and clearly laid out details that cover even a full printed map of all menus - Five stars for the Operating Guide alone, next, the glass, image quality is superb thanks to a high performance Carl Zeiss lens, to which I must add, the most wonderful feature on the camera, for me, is the smooth zoom that is easy to control for dynamic and impressive slow zoom which can be pushed to a fast zoom all the while under the full control of the videographer. With 8.9 megapixels for the still camera, you have something that is suitable for wildlife images using the powerful (32x) optical zoom, or, take stills at the same time you are shooting video footage, all done without a glitch to either still or movie action on the fly. Great quality camera for the price!
This camera is amazing. Once I charged up this puppy and fired it up it looked awesome. I filmed my dog and you could see every strand of hair on his body and the texture of the hair. It also has the smiling sensor technology that is really neat. Put it in video mode and when someone smiles SNAP!....a photo is automatically taken (you can set it on or off). I like that its flash memory as well (hard drives dont survive drops so well). I gotta say Sony put out one sexy stylish camcorder. It looks great in the hand and it definitely got some peoples attention. Once you get this camcorder you'll never want to go back to SD recording. Here are my PROs and CONs:

Truly HD camcorder in pocket size! Buy, Buy Buy!
Excellent EXMOR Sensor and image processing engine, the BEST as for today! Small size. Full HD. Fast start. Even with "Limited" features has a lots of them. Camera instantly detected in PC-XP Pro and Mac-OS/X. I do not care about 4MP still shots, so won't even bother to talk about it.

Native MTS camcorder format is not supported by many players. It needs to be converted to H.264 usable by BlueRay players ...
I was reading reviews before buying this camcorder, and was just amazed how much ridiculous stuff people were saying. Some have no clue what to do with this (or Canon...) HiDef camcorders! Speaking about this CX100 - there is nothing to be scared about. Nor about Canon's or others Sony, Canon Panasonic's ... all using slightly different flavors/methods of recording AVCHD. Sony happen to mark their movies with MTS extension. I have ~6 years old Pentium 4 2.8HT/2 GB RAM/XFX with NVidia7600GT card/DirectX 9.x. (Window Media Player +Xvid plugin) playback is not...

Sony Professional DSR-PD170 3 CCD MiniDV Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom Top Price

The new DSR-PD170 DVCAM compact camcorder provides high quality acquisition in the DVCAM component digital format, as well as in DV, allowing up to 40 minutes recording on one tape Mini DVCAM tape, or 60 minutes on the same tape in the DV mode. This compact camcorder features three Advanced HAD 1/3 inch CCDs that allow two scanning modes: 480 progressive (for still) and interlaced (for video). These Advanced HAD¿ CCDs also provide high quality acquisition with increased resolution and sensitivity at reduced noise and vertical smear. The new enhancements to the CCDs have enabled the minimum illumination to be improved to an incredible 1 lux. The DSR-PD170 also features a built-in slot for MemoryStick. Up to 988 JPEG pictures can be stored on one 64 MB MemoryStick. In addition, the stored images can be mixed or keyed to the live image allowing logo insertion and/or mix effects. The built-in high MTF quality 12X electronic zoom lens features Auto focus and SuperSteadyShot¿ with manual Zoom, Focus and Iris control capability. Other enhancements from the DSR-PD150 include a larger high-resolution B&W viewfinder and a newly developed color swing out Hybrid LCD with greater brightness to increase monitoring capability in bright light conditions. The DSR-PD170 now has a larger handle with start/stop functions as well as zoom control on the handle for easy access and enhanced shooting capabilitiesThe DSR-PD170 is a high quality video camera well suited to a broad range of applications -- from event videography to training videos to filmmaking. It's small size and long battery life make it ideal for use in the field, and its broad array of manual override features make it a very adaptable camera for all sorts of shooting environments.

DSRPD170 audio inputs
Two XLR audio inputs allow you to connect pro mics or external audio.
3CCD camera system
Originally, camcorders used one CCD--the imaging device that turns light into electronic information--and let the image processing unit decider the color information from the data. Like today's broadcast video cameras, however, the DSR-PD170 uses a prism to divide incoming light into three beams and uses specially tuned 1/3-inch CCDs to create red, blue, and green composite images, which are assembled into a final image. The result is a more film-like vibrancy and more accurate color representation. Advanced HAD technology reduces fixed pattern noise and the vertical smear sometimes associated with CCD images.

Audio
The DSR-PD170 records two channels of PCM digital sound with the 48 kHz/16-bit or 32 kHz/12-bit mode. It features a ECM-NV1 electret condenser microphone, as well as two XLR audio input connectors for use with professional-grade microphones or external audio sources.

DSRPD170 zoom start stop
A zoom lever and a rec start/stop button are built into the handle.
12x optical zoom lens
The DSR-PD170 is equipped with a 12x zoom lens. Zoom comes in handy when you can't get close enough to your subject for proper framing, such as a sporting event or nature photography. The camera also has digital zoom feature selectable for 24x or 48x. Users should note, however, that digital zoom comes at the expense of picture quality, since it is achieved by discarding part of the information from the frame.

In order to facilitate zoom control and recording operation during low-angle shooting, an additional zoom lever and a rec start/stop button have been added to the carrying handle. Furthermore, the supplied wireless Remote Commander unit can be used for external control.

To protect your investment, the DSR-PD170 comes with a lens hood with a built-in lens cap, which will keep your glass from getting dirty or scratched. The hood can be opened or closed by using a lever on the side of the hood, so it will never get lost. Also, it comes with a wide conversion lens, which is ideal for shooting indoors or in small spaces.

DSRPD170 zoom start stop
The kit includes a wide
converter lens and hood.
Optical Super SteadyShot system
Sony's optical Super SteadyShot System helps remove the slight hand jitter and vibration that is often the bane of video production. Sensors inside the camera detect horizontal and vertical movements and the camera can counteract those movements by adjusting the lens mechanism on the fly. This is superior to digital anti-shake systems that counteract image shake by trimming off edges of the frame.

Large precision black & white viewfinder and LCD monitor
View your subject through the built-in viewfinder, the swing-out LCD display, or both. The camera features a 0.44-inch type black & white LCD viewfinder and a 2.5-inch color LCD monitor. You'll save battery time by using just one, but you may want to use one for adjusting focus and the other for monitoring audio levels.

Index marking and title function
When using a Cassette Memory-equipped DVCAM/DV tape, an index can be marked while recording with the DSR-PD170 or recording from an external video source, which makes for quick access later on. Also, you can store titles in the cassette memory for overlay during playback.

More DSR-PD170 features

Outstanding camera, period.
I've used this camera on several professional video shoots now, including talking heads, outdoors and an indoor music video. The low light capability of this camera is nothing short of stunning, with clear, crisp images available even when using only available tungsten room lights. We shot a girl playing the piano with candles in the background and only the piano lamp and it looked great. The PD170 is very easy to use for the beginner and a breeze to tweak on the fly. It has solid, nicely positioned controls (for full auto and full manual configurations), pro XLR audio/mic inputs and easily accessible miniDV cassette mechanism that lets you change tapes while the camera is on the tripod. Its DVCam recording mode runs the DV tape at a faster rate, giving you about 43 minutes of recording on an hour miniDV tape. The higher recording speed is not mandatory, but does improve quality when you choose to use it. Autofocus is crystal clear, but easily manipulated manually with a great...

One of the greats in prosumer DV history...
Clean, beautiful images. Rugged construction. A fine run'n'gun videographic instrument, although after a year now I wish that I had gone with the shoulder cam version, the DSR-250, but that's another story...

Likes:

Wide range of shutterspeeds (1/4-1/10000).

Clean gain up to 9 or 12 db

and very light sensitive to boot.

Simultaneous B/W Viewfinder and color LCD.

Fairly sharp B/W Viewfinder, a must-have feature, imo.

Dislikes:

A few misplaced and unnecessary controls along the bottom ridge.

A few misplaced and very necessary controls, such as the iris control wheel that gets blocked by LCD screen when open and isn't very accessible for handheld besides.

Weak audio preamps.

For event videography, this camera just plain reigns supreme, for the price.

EXCELLENT VIDEO, SHARP PICTURES, LONG BATTERY LIFE, EASY TO USE AND CARRY!

MORE PROS THAN CONS, ALL AND ALL, AN EXTREMELY GOOD PRODUCT!

Very nice HandiCam with excellent picture, image stabilization, but limited zoom
Cameras like this one are limited in several ways. If you are expecting a full Camcorder experience, you will be disappointed. But, if you can live with limited zoom and just want a seperate handicam that can do High Def 1080p, good sound, and easy to edit video (built in USB connector!), then you are going to love this small, beautiful camcorder with 12.8MP camera.

Quite frankly, newer smartphones are coming up with similiar specs for taking video. However, having this has certain benefits. First, battery life of top end smartphones are often limited. Second, you may need to use your phone while recording a scene. If I am on vacation with my family and need to connect to work, I can't simply hand my phone to my wife or daughter hand have them take videos, for instance. With this inexpensive solution, I can. Considering you can find a good used or refurbished for under a $100, sometimes lower than 50, this makes an excellent HD camera to take with you for all kinds of...

Sony DCRTRV103 Handycam Digital Camcorder Reviews

Hi-8mm Handycam Vision digital camcorder w/stereo recording and playback. 360X digital zoom, nightshot infrared 0Lux system, special effects, 2 1/2" Swivelscreen color LCD. Laserlink connection, Image stabilization, remote

  • 360x digital zoom
  • High-quality Digital 8 format
  • Infrared night video capability
  • Stereo recording
  • 2.5-inch swivel LCD screen

Amazing value - a true convergence product
I connect this camcorder to my PC via its firewire port. Not only can I edit the footage I shoot on my PC, but the analog-in feature allows me to tape TV shows and copy VHS tapes to my computer hard drive. The quality of the camera is very high, and the 2.5" LCD is plenty big. I have purchased the NPF950 battery, which allows 12 hours of continuous operation. This is a very well thought out product.

ULTIMATE CAM
Ive used a number of camcorders in the past,VHS,VHS-C,8mm,Hi-8,Mini DV,and now Digital-8. At first I thought it was a joke, recording onto the old 8mm format in digital, but once I used the camera and saw the flawless picture and incredible sound I was proved wrong. It looks like a regular 8mm camera but it's silver, that seems to be the digital camera color.I feel the most impressive feature on this camera is the night shot mode, you can see and film in total darkness. Also with most digital models being so small you can't get a very big zoom, but since this one is 8mm size the optical zoom is 20x. And of course since it's a Sony it is packed with unmatched looks and great specials modes. I have no reservations for the DCRTRV103 its a top of the line camera with top of the line features at a reasonable price.

Sony CCDTRV328 Hi8 Analog Handycam Camcorder w/20x Optical Zoom Promo Offer

2/8/200615-19-32...

  • Compact Hi8 Handycam camcorder with 320,000-pixel CCD
  • 20x optical zoom lens (digital zoom to 990x) with manual focus and image stabilizer
  • 2.5-inch rotating LCD and black-and-white viewfinder
  • Low-light recording settings and built-in white LED light
  • NP-FM30 InfoLithium Rechargeable Battery

Very happy with it
When our 8mm stopped working that we had used for nine years, I found it overwhelming to research and find a new camera.
I knew I didn't want digital because I don't even use my digital still camera very often, other than to e-mail pictures.
I knew that I wanted another 8mm, so that we could play our tapes we have now. I didn't want to spend too much money. We received this camera a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. It even has more options than I really need. We charged the battery when we got the camera and for 2 weeks we have been filming the kids occasionally and the battery is still full. I never thought I would use the night vision, but have found it is fun to film the kids when they are asleep and I don't have to turn a light on to film. The zoom works well and the color looks good. For the price, I don't see how you could get a better camera. I don't think you could find a better analog camera even if you did spend more money. I obviously can't...

Great Camera!
I owned this camera for a long time and I absolutely loved it. I Don't know what that other guy with the bad review is talking about, saying this camera has grainy pictures. It is analog so the video is not as clear as digital, but for an analog camera the video is great. I would recommend this camera to any one who wants a nice analog camera with great features and who is not ready to delve into the digital world.

Sony DCRTR7000 Handycam Digital Video Camcorder Top Deals

The Sony DCR-TR7000 Handycam gives you a range of advancedfeatures for high-quality digital video recording. It uses the Digital8 recording format, which gives you up to 500 lines of horizontalresolution and CD-quality 16- or 12-bit PCM stereo audio. It alsooffers image stabilization to help prevent camera shake, and featuresa 20x optical/360x digital zoom to get you close to the action.

TheDCR-TR7000 has a good selection of preset exposure modes to help youget great shots in any lighting situation. It also includes a hugevariety of special effects, from stretch and solarization to sepia andslow shutter. The included IEEE 1394 (Firewire) output lets youdownload digital video to your computer. (You need an IEEE 1394 cardon your computer to do this.) It also offers analog recordingcapability, which allows you to record from an analog source andconvert to digital video through AV inputs.

The Sony DCR-TR7000Handycam also offers Sony's exclusive NightShot capability, which letsyou shoot video in total darkness. The camcorder emits an invisibleinfrared beam to light the scene. The resulting video is basicallyblack and white and lower quality than normal, but it's amazing thatyou can even get decent images in complete darkness.

Sony manages tooffer these advanced features in a digital camcorder at a decent priceby not including an LCD viewfinder--so if you prefer an LCD screen, you may want to consider another model. But if you prefer to shootthrough an eyepiece, this digital camcorder is a great value.

  • High-resolution Digital 8 format
  • 20x optical/360x digital zoom
  • Analog-source recording capability
  • CD-quality PCM digital stereo audio
  • Infrared night-shooting ability with slow shutter

Great camcorder
The DCR-TR7000 is a great camcorder if you can find it at a resonable price. The DCR-TR7000 has all the features of the higher priced Sony Camcorders minus one option - the view window. Personally, I find the windows to be of little use unless you are viewing what you taped but you still need headphones to listen to the audio.

Of particular interest on these Sony Digital 8 are Steadyshot (works very well), Nightshot (can see subjects in 0 light via infrared light emitted from front of camera), the ability to send the digital data (via iLink (IEEE1394, Firewire)) to your computer and autofocus/exposure.

The Little Camcorder that Could.
I had been using a 2-chip Hi8 camcorder for years, but my baby finally conked out. This machine was a godsend! Image quality almost as good, the ability to playback my old Hi8 tapes, and the digital recording and firewire output to my computer has completely changed the way I shoot, edit, and present my videos.

The only thing I could think of that I would want is a 3-chip version of The Little Camcorder that Could.

Whether you're an old hand, or just getting into video, you need to check out Sony's Digital8 system. The tape stock is a lot cheaper then Mini DV, plus you can still play back your 8mm/Hi8 tapes on it.
